Investment for Limerick Factory
December 3, 2015
Irish Cement has produced an information booklet ‘Investing in Our Future’ which outlines plans for the next phase of investment in Limerick Cement Works. The investment plans focus on the replacement of fossil fuels with locally produced alternative fuels, manufactured from residual waste materials and will include used tyres. Fossil fuel replacement in the cement industry began over 35 years ago in Europe and this experience demonstrates the use of these alternative fuels has no negative impact on the emissions from the cement plants. The use of alternative fuels in the cement kilns helps to divert this waste from landfill, reduces the CO2 emissions and helps make better use of limited resources. This investment is an endorsement of the operations in Limerick and will be important to help secure the future of the Works in Limerick. Irish Cement will soon be lodging a planning application with Limerick County Council and will also be applying to the EPA for a review of its Environmental Licence.
